Volunteer
Become a Volunteer!
There will be no Volunteer Hours on Thanksgiving (Thursday November 27), Christmas Day (Thursday December 25), or New Year's Day (Thursday January 1).
Volunteers are needed in many programs that benefit the cats of Harmony House by raising funds, caring for the cats directly, and providing a safe and loving environment for every cat. Read over all the opportunities available, and get involved by signing up online today! You will receive an e-mail acknowledging your application, and listing the dates for upcoming volunteer orientations.
Volunteers must be 18 years or older to participate in most volunteer activities. The Socialization Program is currently the only activity open to volunteers under the age of 18.
Vet Transport
Transport volunteers are needed Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-12 p.m. to drive cats and kittens to vet appointments. A staff member will accompany you on your first trip to introduce you to the hospital staff, and teach you how to fill out paperwork and take notes during each appointment. Appointments are arranged in advance with the shelter manager. Reliability, attention to detail, and promptness are essential. You must provide your own car, be a licensed driver, and be 18 years or older.
Socialization Program
Socialization volunteers groom the cats, play with the friendly ones, and learn one-on-one socialization techniques for use with the timid cats being rehabilitated for adoption. This program takes place 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in September-May, and 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays only in June, July, and August. The Socialization program also serves as the training area for Outreach and Special Events volunteers.
Volunteers under the age of 18 are welcome to participate in the Socialization Program, but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian during orientation and while volunteering.
Outreach
Help the cats put their best paw forward by participating in adoption events, and appearing at various pet stores, pet shows, and animal-friendly shops. You will promote Harmony House's cats and upcoming events by talking with visitors at our table or booth, and distributing newsletters and event flyers. Reliability and promptness are essential, as well as a friendly and courteous manner with the public. A knowledge of the shelter, and its adoption and admission policies, is necessary to answer questions at an Outreach event. It is recommended that you attend Socialization Nights to become familiar with Harmony House. Outreach volunteers must be 18 years or older.
Special Events
Special events, such as the Walkathon and Holiday Fest, are held seven to nine times throughout the year and require the talents and hard work of our volunteers. From planning the event, making craft items and baked goods, to working the event day, and cleaning up, there are many tasks to be done. Event planning and set-up usually take place on weekday evenings, and special events on weekend afternoons. Special Event volunteers must be 18 years or older.
